My personal inbox is full of email communication following sign up or purchase and I love them! You really should never be scared of growing your email list and communicating with your customer because they want to hear from you!

Now don’t get me wrong I do hit delete and some days have no time to read and digest all that I receive. On other days a subject title grabs my attention, strikes a chord or I am just in the mood. Without email
communication, I wouldn’t have recently purchased new crockery, asked my family for birthday vouchers for the local (and very lovely) spa or found my present business coach and mentor!

Why is email marketing scary?

Reasons include:

• I don’t want to lose customers

• I don’t know what to say or don’t have enough to say

• I might offend the receiver

• I don’t have time!

Okay so it can be scary but with a little planning, only sharing content of interest to your audience and consistency - email marketing can be extremely successful! The key to this success is firstly understanding who your target audience is and what their problems, worries or concerns are. You can then communicate in a way that resonates by sharing content that solves their problem, reduces their worry or positively addresses their concerns.

Planning content and deciding on frequency in advance will help address the ‘I don’t know what to write’ and ensure you share that which is of interest to the reader so you won’t offend them! If they signed up for your newsletter they want to hear from you – so don’t disappoint!

Discover your email flow

Finding your email style will help to create consistency, enable you to connect with the reader because they will know what to expect. Where are you comfortable – analytical and research based, short and punchy or more of a talker? If you are not a natural writer you might like to enlist the help of a copywriter, which is also a good option if you are time short!

Email is a simple and effective way to develop a deeper relationship with your audience and you really shouldn’t be scared of adding a contact to your list when a person has given you a business card – they have done so to keep in touch. If this feels unnatural to you, ask them first if it’s okay to do so.

Whatever you decide to do, stick to it and if you have any concerns at all why not survey a small number of recipients and gather feedback to improve your email campaigns.
